Al Caldwell’s “rock&roll” career began in the fifties at a tiny radio station in Baytown. After heading west to Los Angeles and a brief stop in Galveston he came to Beaumont. In his 49th year he now runs them on a computer instead of “spinning 45 rpm records. He was the first DJ ever to play a ZZ Topp song and gave them their first playing job at the Knights of Columbus hall on College street. His “Rose Room” dances at Hotel Beaumont gave crowds in person appearances from the Grass Roots to Paul Revere and the Raiders, Gary Puckett and Johnny Winter. Many of these acts also played across the street at the old Beaumont city auditorium. He is a board of director member of the Texas Radio Hall of Fame. He was inducted in 2005. He is still playing the music he loves best daily from 9am-12noon on KCOL.
